A biolubricant is characterized as an innovative and environmentally friendly lubricant formulated from biodegradable, non-toxic sources, aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the lubricant industry.
Although the concept of "biolubricant" has been around since 2010, it has yet to gain widespread adoption. At Interlub, we are committed to transforming all our lubricants into biolubricants in the future, thus leading the way toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
It can be summarized in four essential pillars:
1. Renewable sources (Bio based): Biolubricants must use diverse bio-based materials in their creation. To make it more tangible, some examples include:
o Synthetic esters: Derived from fatty acids and alcohol, they are biodegradable, thermally resistant, and compatible with elastomers.
o Vegetable oils: Extracted from crops like soybeans, sunflower, and safflower, these oils are biodegradable, renewable, and excellent for reducing friction.
2. Non-toxic: To determine whether a lubricant is toxic, we follow the ECHA ECP standard (Link to the official page: Home - ECHA (europa.eu)). This standard state that a lubricant is toxic if it meets criteria such as being hazardous to human health or the environment due to its acute or chronic toxicity, its potential to bioaccumulate, or its persistence in the environment. Additionally, it is evaluated if it contains carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic substances for reproduction, as well as substances that affect aquatic organisms or water quality.
3. Biodegradable:: The biodegradability of an industrial lubricant is measured through standardized tests that assess the ability of environmental microorganisms to break down the lubricant into simpler components. One of the most common tests is the international standard OECD 301B, which measures aerobic biodegradability using soil microorganisms.
4. High performance: A biolubricant is not only eco-friendly but also the best for the task. It must be the most suitable for the final application, ensuring reduced lubricant and energy consumption, thereby contributing to a lower CO2 footprint.
At Interlub, we are committed to leading the charge toward a more sustainable future. Our wide range of biolubricants not only protects your machines but also contributes to the preservation of our planet.
